Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is a technique I am trained in that can help reduce anxiety. Commonly used with people who have experienced a traumatic incident, evidence has shown that the technique can also help reduce anxiety around phobias as well.
Traumatic Incidents
A traumatic incident is can be considered as an event that involved actual of threatened death or serious injury, or a threat to the physical integrity of self or other and the persons response involved intense fear, helplessness or horror. (Reference: - DSM IV TR, 2000)
Traumatic incidents that people experience can include car accidents, physical, emotional or sexual abuse, being attacked and most types of crime to name a few.
People who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic incident, whether recently or in the past, may have reoccurring images, thoughts, dreams about the incident. They may avoid a particular area, they may jump at loud noises, have difficulty concentrating, difficulty falling or stay asleep, are a few of the consequences. There are many others.
Phobias
EMDR can also be used to treat phobias for example spiders, flying, confined spaces, needles etc. When a person suffers anxiety that a phobia induces this can restrict their life in some way that they no longer want. If you suffer from a phobia and would like more information about EMDR and how this could help you, please contact me for an assessment session.
